Happy Holidays from the Nature Club!
It is December so it must be time for our annual Nature Club “gift exchange”, the announcements of the 2008 photo winners and our last meeting of the year.
Please make your plans to attend this year’s event.
Date: Tuesday, December 9th
Time: 6:30pm
Place: 128 Park Ridge (limited parking so please car pool if possible)
Hosts: Vriesenga’s and Hamilton’s
RSVP: Contact Mary Malone, club secretary, (marywmalone@gmail.com) with your headcount and confirm what food or beverage you are bringing to share.
Misc: Please bring folding chairs and a small flashlight for the return to your vehicle.
The gift exchange is great tradition of fun for the Nature Club. Either a couple shares a gift or you can to choose to bring one for each individual if that fits your situation better.
While we do not have a specific rule about gift cost, we would suggest that you not spend a lot on a gift. If you are looking for an idea for a gift to share, then think about seasonal, nature related, funny items, home made crafts / decorations / baked goods or a bottle of wine will make a great gift exchange. The diversity of items and the thought that obviously went into their delivery makes this gift exchange very interesting and fun.
Please be a part of bringing a gift and getting into the exchange game.
With best wishes for a healthy and happy 2001!
COMMUNITY SERVICE UPDATE
Last summer the Cordillera Nature Club supported the Cibolo Nature Center summer outdoor program by providing scholarships for 10 underprivileged children to attend the weeklong camps. The Nature Adventure Day Camps are targeted to children 6 to 12 years old, and feature outdoor familiarization with topics ranging from bugs, reptiles, birds, water, and even dinosaurs. The children are supervised by adults and counselors ages 13 and up. The counselors attend a training camp on weekends in April to qualify for leadership roles during the following summer. Children who attend the summer camps come away from the experiences gained during the camps with a higher level of appreciation for nature and the world in which we live.
OAK WILT ALERT !!!
There is Oak Wilt in Cordillera!!!
This information is of utmost importance for all Cordillera property owners. Oak wilt is present in Fair Oaks Ranch, and the City of Fair Oaks has instituted strict guidelines on the prevention of oak wilt. Please be advised that there are many oak wilt centers in Kendall and surrounding counties. Our own trees are at risk!! We recommend that no pruning of live oak, blackjack oaks, and red oaks be done from February 1 through June 1. We also encourage our residents to preserve the natural beauty of these trees and not prune them for purely cosmetic reasons. Prevention of oak wilt is our responsibility. All property owners with healthy oaks should immediately paint all wounds, including fresh pruning cuts, on live oaks, blackjack oaks and red oaks! If possible, avoid pruning from February 1 to July 1. There is more information on the Texas Forest Service Oak Wilt website: http://txforestservice.tamu.edu/main/article.aspx?ctrl=6
